Why is TikTok so popular?

Formally known at Musical.ly, TikTok is a relatively new social media platform that allows its users to share short videos, of between 3 to 15 seconds long, though users can upload videos that last up to 60 seconds.

Like other social media platforms, it includes features such as stickers, filters and augmented reality.

TikTok users can choose to overlay popular songs on their videos, as well as voiceovers, sounds clips and sound effects. Backgrounds can be removed at the click of a button and replaced with a background of the user's choice…the possibilities are endless.

When you load the app, a page details the accounts you’re following and there’s also a ‘for you’ page. The app constantly learns which videos you like and engage with so that your ‘for you’ page displays more of the content you like.

Is this all that makes the app so popular?

Trending content has found a new home on TikTok. Your ‘for you’ page constantly updates itself, and you’re rarely shown the same content twice; this means users constantly find new creators and people to follow with no effort.

Content that works well on the platform is that which utilises trending hashtags. There’s also a lot of interaction when people join in with the latest challenges. Combined with how user-friendly the app is, it’s easy to see why users continually come back to the app.

Social media is often a form of escapism from what goes on in the real world. For the most part, social media platforms are happy places, where people post positive news and thoughts as well as their achievements. TikTok is as entertaining as it is relative.
